Golden Rules of Firearm Safety

Updated: Sep 23

Today, I want to start a conversation about the basics of firearm safety—especially for those new to shooting. Many reading this might find it a bit mundane, which is fine, because these ideals should be imprinted into any veteran shooter’s DNA at this point. So, whether you’re new to firearms or just need a refresher, it’s crucial to build solid habits early on and maintain them. Let’s get into it.

1. Always Keep Your Firearm Pointed in a Safe Direction

You’ve heard it a million times, and for good reason. The second you treat a firearm as if it’s not loaded, that’s when mistakes happen. Even if you’re 110% sure that it’s unloaded, always handle it as if it’s ready to fire while maintaining a safe trigger finger position and safe muzzle direction. It’s a habit that can save lives, and frankly, it should become second nature. There’s no such thing as “being too careful” when it comes to handling firearms. Period.

2. Always Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until You’re Ready to Shoot

This one is critical. So many accidental discharges occur because someone rested their finger on the trigger too soon. It sounds simple, right? But in a high-stress situation, muscle memory takes over. If your finger is hovering over the trigger, it’s easier to press it unintentionally. Keep your index finger up and away from the trigger guard, until your sights are on target and you’ve made the conscious decision to shoot.

3. Always Know Your Target and What Lies Beyond It

Here’s where we go a little deeper than just hitting the bullseye. It’s not enough to focus solely on your target—you have to know what’s behind and around it at all times. Bullets don’t just stop when they hit paper; they keep going. In many cases, bullets can over-penetrate a threat when defending yourself in a dynamic critical incident. Whether you’re at the range or in a real-life situation, always be aware of what could be in your line of fire and always be aware of your backstop. As we say in every class, every projectile that exits the muzzle of your firearm has a lawsuit attached to it. Whether we are plinking targets on the farm, or we’re in the fight for our lives, we are responsible for every trigger press.

4. Always Keep Firearms Unloaded Until Ready For Use

Proper firearms securement is imperative. We are the last line of defense when it comes to allowing children or unauthorized users access to our equipment. Store your safety-checked firearms and ammunition in separate, secure locations.

Final Thoughts

Safety isn’t just something to think about when you're on the range; it should be embedded in every interaction you have with your firearm. Whether it’s your first time handling a gun or your hundredth, these principles will always apply. In fact, the more you train with safety in mind, the more confident and competent you’ll become. So, stay vigilant, keep trained, sharp, and remember: the basics aren’t just for beginners.

Stay frosty, and keep your head on a swivel.
