“Darned if you do, darned if you don’t.” That adage is thrown around a lot when it comes to how law enforcement approaches almost any situation, but what about average citizens who are just trying to protect themselves in a deadly use of force encounter? As a law enforcement officer, I’ve seen firsthand how responsible firearm ownership can play a positive role in keeping our communities safe. It’s my firm belief that law-abiding citizens who are properly trained and educated in gun safety can have a significant impact on crime prevention. Responsible gun owners are often the first line of defense when it comes to protecting their families and property. In many cases, just the knowledge that citizens are armed can deter criminals from committing crimes in the first place. More and more states are beginning to allow citizens to carry firearms more easily or readily, affording law-abiding citizens the ability to carry a firearm nearly all the time.
From my perspective, there needs to be a strong partnership between law enforcement and responsible gun owners. While officers are trained to respond to emergencies, we can’t be everywhere at once. The knowledge that trained, responsible citizens have the means to defend themselves can provide a sense of reassurance to families while out in the community. However, it’s not enough for citizens to simply own firearms; they must also be proficient with their skills and understand the laws that govern responsible firearm ownership. Being well-versed in local and federal laws—especially when it comes to carrying a firearm in public—helps ensure that if the need to use your firearm arises (and we hope it doesn’t, but train if it does), then it is done so responsibly and legally. In my opinion, the idea of an informed and prepared gun owner can, in itself, be a deterrent to future crimes, knowing that the good guys have guns too.
With that being said, it’s crucial that firearm ownership comes with a sense of responsibility and respect for the law. We encourage not only proper training and regular practice but also a deep understanding of the legal aspects of carrying a firearm. By insisting on being proficient both in handling skills and knowledge of the law, responsible gun owners contribute to a safer community and prevent unnecessary legal issues. When citizens and law enforcement work together, following both safety protocols and legal guidelines, we create a stronger, more secure environment for everyone and our futures. Stay frosty, and keep your head on swivels my friends.
